Perfect Timing

Author: Andrea Hess

Sometimes, life hands us a beautiful lesson within just one short experience. The other day, I left my house and drove through my neighborhood, only to end up at my least favorite intersection just as the light was turning red. This particular stop light greatly favors the traffic on the main street and seems to take a small eternity to turn green when approached from my direction.

Thinking myself such a clever girl, I decided to detour down another side street. I figured I could circle around to the main street and approach the same intersection from the other direction while the light was still green.

Wouldnt you know it, but just as I approached the intersection, the light turned red for the main street traffic. I had to laugh as I sat at that red light, watching the traffic pull out of my side street. I knew if I had just waited patiently, Id be cruising along already.

Thats the thing about perfect timing. When the time is not quite right for us to get on the road towards our goals, we can do one of two things. We can sit patiently at the red light and make the most of our time there. We can enjoy listening to the radio. We can even take care of a few details, like putting on lipstick or checking the voice mail on our cell phone. Or we can spin our wheels on a useless detour, wasting gas and energy, only to realize that, after all that effort, the red light is still in front of us.

The next time you encounter a stop light in your life, consider that perhaps the timing is not quite right yet. Perhaps youve already taken a few detours of your own, only to end up stuck at the same crossroads. Take a deep breath, and try just enjoying where you are right now. The time for forward movement has perhaps simply not yet come. Gather your resources and do what you can to be productive.

Just like at an intersection, when it is your turn to go, there will be a shift in the flow of traffic. The way for you to move forward will suddenly become free of other vehicles, free of obstacles. But until the light turns in your favor, trust that you are in that perfect place before the next step. When you do proceed, it will be with perfect timing!
