Hair Color Treatments: What You Should Know

Author: Cory Willins
Semi-permanent, demi-permanent and permanent hair color treatments are available and are the three main methods of coloring. Permanent is the longest lasting color treatment, followed by demi and then semi-permanent colors. If you are not sure what exact color you would like, experimenting with the semi-permanent colors is a good way to try out different colors before making a final decision.

All types of hair coloring treatments can be done either at home or in a salon, and your comfort level with the process is really the deciding factor. The home kits no longer have as harsh of a chemical smell that the older kits did, and involve simply adding the color, leaving it in, and washing it out with shampoo and a good conditioner.

Since there is no chemical interaction between semi-permanent color and your hair, the color just gradually fades out with each wash. The molecules of color actually enter the hair shaft and enhance your natural tones and colors. When you wash your hair you gradually remove the small color molecules from the hair and the color slowly returns to normal. Most semi-permanent hair colors last a week or two, depending on how frequently you shampoo. Some gray will be covered with semi-permanent color, but there will also be about half left. The lack of ammonia or peroxide in these treatments means that hair cannot be lightened, only the tones and colors enhanced. If you are concerned about trying out different colors without issues with roots or touch-ups, a semi-permanent color is a great idea.

If you wish to have the color remain in your hair a bit longer, try a demi-permanent color. This product contains some peroxide, so will have a more noticeable enhancement to your hair color, but still will not be able to bleach or lighten because there is no ammonia. The molecules of a demi-permanent color are larger than that of the semi-permanent color, and therefore will remain in the hair longer. The peroxide allows these larger molecules to enter the hair itself, without actually chemically changing the hair.

Permanent hair color contains both ammonia and peroxide, and does chemically alter your hair to give a permanent color change. It will not wash out; rather you will need to grow your hair to cut off the color. Because the process actually changes the structure of the hair, permanent hair color can change dark hair to light, as well as light hair to dark. As this is a chemical process, it is important to check a small portion of your hair before proceeding with the process. There will be some differences between individuals, so be aware of slight color variations. If you are unsure of the process, it is a good idea to have a professional hair stylist complete the process.

Any hair that has already been chemically treated can react differently to semi or demi permanent hair colors. Often these colors can become permanent on previously treated hair, so it is a wise idea to use a stylist to avoid any mistakes.
