DNA Testing

Author: Kristy Annely

Apart from DNA fingerprinting, which is a type of DNA test that is done to help prove the guilt or innocence of a person, another commonly used DNA test is the DNA paternity test. This test is done to establish whether a child is indeed the son or the daughter of a person through a comparison of their DNA. However, given that this test is now being routinely done, you can expect that there would be a large number of companies that would offer this service. A simple search on the Internet can lead you to about two million web sites. Given this, you need to be armed with information on the test itself so that you will know what to look for in the companies you would consider to perform the test.

Who can do a paternity test?

One of the first things you should know is which companies can offer paternity tests. There are three types of companies that provide testing services, which include companies that specialize in paternity tests and who have their own laboratories to conduct the test, companies who act as brokers for other service providers, and laboratories who carry out these tests as a side-line. As much as possible, you should solicit the services of the first type of company that provides these tests because you can be assured not only of reliable results but also of utmost confidentiality.

Additional information

Once you have made a decision on which company would do the test for you, there are additional information that you need to get before they do the analysis, as these will further help you make sure that the test would be reliable, and remain confidential. One of the first questions you should ask the company is about their facilities because companies that have facilities that are accredited by external organizations can be considered more reliable. Other questions include asking about their track record in presenting evidence in court, the way they present results, and on whether they duplicate the test to confirm the initial results.

The sensitive nature of paternity tests and the consequences of the results of the test highlight the need for people to get a reliable company who would do the test and would provide accurate results and protect their privacy. Fortunately, a good amount of research and being able to ask the right questions can help in the search for such a company.
